Last week, my very dear professor, Ma'am Lady Madrid, had the chance to stay with us at the orgroom. Well, she took her lunch there because she's not feeling good that time and unfortunately that day she had a full time schedule.
I played songs from my phone, one of which is SKINNY LOVE by BIRDY. (the original one is Bon Iver)
She asked me what's the meaning of Skinny Love. I explained to her that it's the kind of love that's not nourished enough. It's not healthy 'cause maybe the other side is not feeling the same way or maybe the other person doesn't get the intentions of the other. These explanations were just based from my opinion. I was surprised with the explanation of the composer about the true meaning of the song SKINNY LOVE.
“It’s about that time in a relationship that I was going through; you’re in a relationship because you need help, but that’s not necessarily why you should be in a relationship. And that’s skinny. It doesn’t have weight. Skinny love doesn’t have a chance because it’s not nourished.”
- Bon Iver
People of the world, when we say or speak about relationships, it's not necessarily BF/GF thing. You can have relationship with any person like friends, colleagues , teammates , groupmates , orgmates etc.
With that, maybe at one point, you did have this kind of love for them or maybe they had this kind of love for you, this Skinny Love.
I'm trying to figure out the real meaning behind its lyrics
Here’s the lyrics:
Come on skinny love just last the year
Pour a little salt, we were never here
My, my, my, my, my, my, my, my
Staring at the sink of blood and crushed veneer
Pour a little salt, we were never here
My, my, my, my, my, my, my, my
Staring at the sink of blood and crushed veneer
" Just last the year " I can feel the pain! If one person is hurt, he or she wants to end everything as soon as possible. Admit it, just to escape from that pain we're going through, we just want to end up everything without saying a word.
"Pour a little salt, we were never here " Yes, you didn't do anything just to make me feel that I belong, that I'm just like any other colleague of yours. You didn't make any effort. (charot! tamang drama :p ) read between the lines. It's painful 'cause you can assume that one didn't do any effort to have a good relationship or maybe one is too concern but the other just don't feel the sincerity of the other one so they end up with nothing but casual relationship not even professional one.
I tell my love to wreck it all
Cut out all the ropes and let me fall
My, my, my, my, my, my, my, my
Right in this moment this order’s tall
I tell my love to wreck it all
Cut out all the ropes and let me fall
My, my, my, my, my, my, my, my
Right in this moment this order’s tall
" I tell my love to wreck it all , cut out all the ropes and let me fall " It's as if one is just staying silent, letting everything fall in its place. It's as if one wants to end the pain, the pain that was brought by the other. One wants to cut it all, to cut everything beginning from the concern down to the very love that's so genuine. (SAKIT! ramdam niyo?)
I told you to be patient
I told you to be fine
And I told you to be balancedAnd I told you to be kind
I told you to be fine
And I told you to be balancedAnd I told you to be kind
" I TOLD YOU " Feel the concern from every word. It's as if one wants to tell the other these lines " Haven't I told you to believe in me? To believe in me 'cause I'll do the rest for you? 'cause I'll take the pain for you? 'cause I'll face the consequences of that day for you? I JUST WANT YOU TO BE PATIENT, TO BE FINE, TO BE BALANCED, TO BE KIND". P E R I O D .
Who will love you?Who will fight?
Who will fall far behind?
Who will fall far behind?
Just think about it. Who else will? Who can? Who can do that same thing for you?
It's nice to think about the real meaning of the songs we're singing. And yes, it's true that sometimes the lyrics of those songs are the words we would like to say, OUT LOUD! Keep on singing!
